The e2editor program
In order to participate in the free Eternity2.net project, you must create a small text file named e2pieces.txt. (see here). You can do this with a simple text editor such as 'notepad' on Windows, which is pretty tedious, or you can use this program to help.
e2editor.exe
This program runs on Windows only (sorry, *nix guys). It can be used to create the e2pieces.txt file. Rather than typing in a series of numbers to represent each unique edge of the pieces, you can now use your mouse to click the relevant coloured triangle for each of the 4 edges of each of the 256 pieces.
Unfortunately it is not possible for Eternity2.net to distribute code which draws the same looking symbols as are on the Eternity II puzzle pieces (due to copyright restrictions). Hence this program just lets you choose a couple of colours (eg inner and outer) that you think are similar to the corresponding edge of the real puzzle. Use the same ordering of colours as shown on the inside front cover of the booklet you received with the Eternity II puzzle. See the instructions here. These colours (a palette) can be saved and restored later. Refer to the (admittedly brief at this point) instructions on the help menu of the e2editor program.
Checksum
Once you have created your puzzle, you can choose the menu option 'calculate checksum'. This creates a one-way hash of the piece configuration you have entered. You can compare this with the value that others have found for their entered pieces. If the numbers are the same, then you have not made any mistakes when entering the piece information.
The checksum for the official Eternity II puzzle is 722481764.
Colour coding
Version 1.03 of e2editor now shows you which pieces you have entered correctly! (via a one-way checksum). If the piece is correctly entered, it has a green border, otherwise a red border!
Palette file
The e2.pal file that you created when using e2editor can also be used to customise the look of the BOINC graphics. Simply put the e2.pal file into the same location as the e2pieces.txt and e2hints.txt files. (eg the c:\program files\BOINC or ~/BOINC directory). Then the Eternity2.net graphics will display this palette for the pieces. (for up to 40 edge colours)
